At Regent’s Events, we’re always looking to nurture and develop talent to create a strong workforce in the events industry, whether at Regent’s or beyond. Below, we hear from our most recent intern, Beth, who has provided invaluable support throughout her three-month placement, during our busiest events season of the year.
During my three-month placement as an Events Management intern at Regent’s University London, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the dynamic world of event planning and coordination.
From the moment I stepped into the Regent’s Events office, I was immediately struck by the vibrant buzz of activity and the palpable energy throughout the whole team. People were bustling about, carrying out various tasks and it was clear that everyone was dedicated to their work. The atmosphere was infectious, if a little overwhelming at first. From the offset I was thrown into the deep end, and I realised this internship wasn’t just going to be making cups of teas for everyone!
Due to the fast-paced environment, every day I learnt something new, coupled with excellent 1:1 training from my manager and hands on experience, I have gained a real in-depth understanding of the events industry. Although it was initially very daunting, I am grateful that I have been pushed out of my comfort zone as this has massively helped my confidence. I have also been inspired by the people around me and the stories they have shared with me about the events industry.
The team was always busy, with at least one event happening every day. Whether it was preparing for a conference for a tech company, a summer party for 1,600 people or coordinating graduation ceremonies, there was never a dull moment. It was awe-inspiring to witness the level of commitment and attention to detail that went into each event. The team’s ability to seamlessly manage multiple tasks was truly remarkable. It was a constant whirlwind of activity, but it was in these moments of chaos that the team thrived, ensuring that everything was perfectly organised.
The scope of functions within the events team was expansive, yet every event was given the same care and time. The large diversity of functions allowed me to gain a comprehensive understanding of event management. I was given the opportunity to be involved in every stage of the process from initial booking and communication with the client to the actual running of the event on the day, as well as the billing post event, and organising internal events. Working with such a wide range of clients at different scales really helped broaden my knowledge and build my confidence with talking to a range of different people from all walks of life.
One of the most valuable lessons I learnt during my time with the events team was the importance of attention to detail. Every aspect of an event, no matter how small, could have a significant impact on its success. From ensuring that signage was placed in the correct locations to coordinating the timing of catering orders, precision was paramount. I quickly grasped the significance of meticulous planning and the need to anticipate potential challenges. This attention to detail was not only critical for the team’s success but also instilled a sense of pride in our work.
Another crucial lesson I learnt was the importance of teamwork and effective communication. The events involved collaboration with colleagues from different departments and external vendors. Clear communication and a collaborative spirit were essential in ensuring that everyone was on the same page and working towards a common goal. In addition to technical skills, I developed strong interpersonal skills, such as diplomacy and adaptability. Dealing with unexpected issues and last-minute changes was a regular occurrence in the world of event planning. These experiences taught me to remain calm under pressure and find creative solutions to challenges.
Overall, my three-month internship with Regent’s was an enriching experience that allowed me to gain valuable knowledge and skills in event management. The friendly working environment helped me thrive and the daily lunch allowance was an unexpected bonus that made my time there even more enjoyable. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from a talented team and contribute to the success of various events. This internship has undoubtedly been a significant steppingstone in my career and I am very grateful for the opportunity. I look forward to applying the knowledge and experience I gained to future endeavours in the events industry.
